For many people, fireworks are a fun way to celebrate holidays and special occasions. But for our pets and the wildlife that share our communities, the loud explosions and bright flashes can be terrifying—and sometimes deadly.
Every year, animal shelters see an increase in lost pets during fireworks celebrations. Even dogs and cats that have never tried to escape before can panic, jump fences, break leashes, claw through screens, or bolt through open doors in an attempt to flee the frightening noise. Sadly, many are injured, become lost, or never make it back home.
The stress doesn’t stop with our family pets. Birds can be startled from their nests in the middle of the night, flying into buildings, power lines, and trees. Deer, rabbits, squirrels, and other wildlife may abandon their young or run into roads to escape the noise. Fireworks also leave behind debris that can be harmful if ingested by animals.
If you have pets, keep them safely indoors before the fireworks begin. Make sure they are wearing identification tags and that their microchip information is current. Close windows and curtains, turn on the television or calming music to help mask the noise, and provide a quiet, secure place where they can feel safe. Never bring pets to fireworks displays, no matter how calm they usually are.
As we celebrate with family and friends, let’s also remember the animals who don’t understand what’s happening. A little extra planning and compassion can save lives and help ensure that the holiday is safe for everyone—both the two-legged and the four-legged members of our community.
